The Spark

As a former apparel designer who worked in the full product cycle, applying for multiple roles meant juggling and tailoring many versions of portfolios and resumes. It’s a cycle that was both overwhelming and deeply stressful. Seeing colleagues share the same pain led to one question: How can I transform this chaos into a sense of control ?

The Bigger Picture

The Bigger Picture

I needed to know if my own struggle was a common one or just a personal hurdle. I began with secondary research digging into reports from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, news articles, professional forums, and how AI and ATS were changing the game. This led to my first significant challenge: the problem space was enormous.

The Job Search Challenge

A Shifting Landscape

The Emotional Toll

Voices of the Research

Voices of the Research

Next I wanted to validate my hypothesis and understand this pressure first through my own primary research. I conducted 3 in-depth interviews.

Candidates I was looking for: Professionals age 22-45, who were actively looking for new roles.

What I wanted to understand: how they navigate the modern job search process, what tools they currently use and their frustrations.

These are some quotes from participants…

"Every company wants you to apply differently. I have to double check and triple check if everything was auto-filled correctly."

On disjointed application processes

"I spend hours updating my files just to hit send, and then… nothing."

On the exhaustion of tailoring materials

"I never track… I just send it and then many times I forget I sent it."

On the absence of an effective tracking system

"The worst part is waiting. I send something in, and then it's just silence."

On emotional drain and lack of feedback

Finding Patterns

Finding Patterns

After conducting in-depth interviews, I organized the raw qualitative data into an Affinity Map to identify recurring patterns and pain points across different user types. The primary and secondary research revealed a problem space that was enormous. Between systemic AI rejection, "unicorn" job descriptions, and a shrinking market, the professional landscape felt like a giant web of disjointed issues.

Rather than trying to fix how companies hire, the focus narrowed to the daily, human struggles of the individual job seeker and how design could restore their sense of control.

The Pivot

Through deeper interviews, I uncovered a behavioral loop: analysis paralysis was fueling procrastination. The pressure of simultaneous expectations in the market forced users into a state of "over-preparing". Obsessing over file versions or job descriptions led to a total freeze in productivity. I realized the "logistical chaos" was merely a symptom of a larger psychological burden: a crisis of confidence. This fragmented routine makes the finish line feel abstract and impossibly far away.

Instead of focusing on the job hunt,

I reframed it as a journey of continuous career growth.
The critical realization was that professionals don't just need a better tracker. They need to feel the weight of their progress. In a process defined by silence, the design must provide its own validation.

The Transitioner

Someone moving from one industry to an entirely new field.

The Struggle: Overwhelmed by the skills gap when pivoting to a new field.

Needs: Motivation that builds the confidence to believe the transition is possible.

The Active Seeker

Currently unemployed or in a bridge job, dedicating most of their energy to landing a new role.

The Struggle: Faces the "Logistical Burden" of tracking dozens of different applications and tailored files.

The Lifelong Learner

Currently employed but focused on "Upskilling and Reskilling" to reach the next level or stay relevant.

The Struggle: Drowning in a "second full-time job" of upskilling and networking.

Needs: Momentum to transform abstract ambitions into daily action.

Framing The Challenge

Framing The Challenge

After synthesizing research from both the market landscape and individual lived experiences, it became clear that the "Job Search" isn't just a logistical problem, it's an emotional and psychological one. To move from "Chaos" to "Growth," I focused on three core pillars: Logistical Control, Emotional Resilience, and Actionable Momentum.

Defining The MVP
Through User Stories

Defining The MVP
Through User Stories

I translated my research insights into User Stories to ensure every feature of AtlasArc serves a direct, human need rather than just filling space. By framing requirements from the user's perspective, I identified a critical insight: Job seekers don't just want to "track" their search; they want to "see" their effort.

This process revealed that the MVP must balance high-level organization with low-stakes, daily engagement to prevent the "Analysis Paralysis" found in my interviews.

Goal Management

Turns overwhelming ambition into daily wins to prevent burnout.

Application Tracker

Provides total visibility across all applications so no follow-up is ever forgotten.

File Management

Eliminates the stress of juggling multiple tailored file versions.

User Flow

User Flow

With the core features defined, I mapped out the User Flow to ensure that navigating the logistical "chaos" felt like a single, streamlined journey. The goal was to create a "Confidence Boost Loop" where administrative tasks—like tracking an application or uploading a file—seamlessly trigger positive reinforcement and momentum.

Bridging Through Design

Bridging Through Design

With my features and flow decided, I started sketching screens with pencil and paper to quickly iterate on the core layout. This low-fidelity stage allowed me to focus on the essential user experience before moving into digital design.
A pivotal decision during this phase was to gamify the career growth experience. By reframing the growth as an exploratory journey which was complete with "Growth Forests" and "Job Quest Islands." I transformed a stressful, logistical process into a nature-inspired path of career development. This visual metaphor moves away from cold, numerical metrics and instead uses "visual growth" to provide the validation and momentum.

To ensure these concepts actually resonated with users, I conducted guerrilla testing with my initial sketches. This rapid testing led to several critical refinements:

Simplifying Navigation:

I reduced immediate cognitive load by streamlining the navigation bar to four primary career tasks, removing non-essential icons like settings to keep the user focused.

Maintaining Task Immersion:

Maintaining Task Immersion:

I transformed full-page celebration screens into contextual pop-up overlays. This ensures the user receives a motivational boost for their "small win" without being pulled away from their current workspace.

Defeating the Blank Page:

Recognizing that starting is often the hardest part, I implemented "Goal Suggestions" to eliminate the pressure of a blank input field and help users take their first step with confidence.

Relocating Data Stress:

Relocating Data Stress:

I moved raw numerical data to a dedicated "Quick Insights" section on the dashboard. This keeps the main interactive areas clean and replaces stressful metrics with calming, nature-based visuals.

The Study Parameters

The Study Parameters

Participants:

5 active job seekers.

Core Tasks:

  • Application Entry: Log and track a new job application.

  • Status Management: Update an application from "Applied" to "Interviewing".

  • Goal Setting: Input a new micro-goal for the day.

  • Goal Completion: Mark a completed goal to trigger the growth mechanic.

  • Asset Management: Upload a newly updated resume version.

Round 1: Identifying Friction

While the nature-inspired theme had strong emotional resonance, the first round revealed two critical navigation "blind spots":

100% of participants were confused by the name "Archive Caves," associating it with old, hidden storage rather than active file management.

The "Archive Caves" Confusion:

Interaction Blind Spot:

Multiple users struggled to mark goals as "completed" because they did not realize the goal cards were interactive, clickable buttons.

Round 2: Validation & Success

Round 2: Validation & Success

The second round of testing confirmed that the refinements significantly improved the user experience:

Intuitive Navigation: Renaming the file hub and adding visual signifiers (chevrons) made the flow much more intuitive.

Emotional Resonance: Users connected strongly with the "nature feel" and the calming aesthetic.

Gamification Success: The "tree-growing" mechanic in the Growth Forest and the use of streaks were highly praised as powerful motivators for maintaining daily momentum.

Future Roadmap

Future Roadmap

Automated Data Capture: Implementing tools to pull job data automatically to reduce manual entry.

  • Expanded Contact Tracking: Moving beyond a single contact to allow users to track multiple stakeholders per company.

  • Calendar Integration: Creating a centralized view for follow-ups and deadlines.
